 Εργαστήριο Μοριακής Οικολογίας και Εξέλιξης

Το εργαστήριο Μοριακής Οικολογίας και Εξέλιξης εφαρμόζει σύγχρονες μοριακές τεχνικές για την απάντηση οικολογικών ερωτημάτων, με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στη μελέτη των νησιωτικών βιοκοινοτήτων. Συγκεκριμένα, χρησιμοποιούμε μοριακούς δείκτες και γενωμικά δεδομένα για τη μελέτη της φυλογένεσης, φυλογεωγραφίας και γενετικής πληθυσμών νησιωτικών οργανισμών καθώς και για την ανάλυση προτύπων βιοποικιλότητας νησιωτικών οικοσυστημάτων, με στόχο την κατανόηση των οικολογικών και εξελικτικών διεργασιών που διαμορφώνουν τους νησιωτικούς βιοκόσμους.

Αυτά είναι κάποια από τα θέματα στα οποία εστιάζεται η έρευνα του εργαστηρίου:

1. Συγκριτική φυλογεωγραφία και γενωμική πληθυσμών για την κατανόηση του ρόλου των οικολογικών χαρακτηριστικών των νησιωτικών ειδών στην τάση τους για διασπορά και στην εξελικτική τους διαφοροποίηση.

2. Μελέτη της επίδρασης των κλιματικών αλλαγών και της κυμαινόμενης στάθμης της θάλασσας κατά τη διάρκεια του Τεταρτογενούς στη δημογραφική ιστορία και τη διαφοροποίηση των νησιωτικών οργανισμών.

3. Ανάπτυξη και εφαρμογή μοριακών εργαλείων για την ταυτοποίηση και οριοθέτηση ειδών, εκτίμηση της βιοποικιλότητας και καταγραφής της δίαιτας ταξινομικών ομάδων που δεν έχουν μελετηθεί επαρκώς.

Για τους σκοπούς αυτούς, συνδυάζουμε εργασία πεδίου με εργαστηριακή δουλειά και βιοπληροφορικές αναλύσεις μοριακών και γονιδιωματικών δεδομένων.

Molecular Ecology and Evolution Lab

The Molecular Ecology and Evolution Lab applies molecular genetics and genomic tools to address ecological questions, with a special focus on the study of island communities. Specifically, we use molecular markers and genomic data to study the phylogeny, phylogeography and population genetics of island taxa, while we also apply DNA-based methodologies to the analysis of biodiversity patterns. Overall, we aim to understand the ecological and evolutionary processes that generate and maintain biodiversity in island systems.

Research topics in the Molecular Ecology and Evolution Lab include:

1. Comparative phylogeography and population genomics to understand the role of ecological traits in the dispersal propensity and diversification of island taxa.

2. Studying the effects of Quaternary climatic change and sea-level oscillations on the demographic history and diversification of island taxa.

3. Developing and applying DNA-based methodologies for species delimitation, large-scale biodiversity assessment and diet inference of poorly known taxonomic groups.

For these purposes, we combine fieldwork with labwork and bioinformatic analysis of molecular and genomic data.
