Ο κος Χατζηγεωργίου γεννήθηκε στο Παλαιομέτοχο της επαρχίας Λευκωσίας και αποφοίτησε από το γυμνάσιο Κύκκου Αρρένων. Σπούδασε στην Ιατρική Σχολή του Εθνικού & Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών από το οποίο αναγορεύθηκε Διδάκτορας Iατρικής. Ειδικεύθηκε στη Νευρολογία στο Νοσοκομείο του Ελληνικού Ερυθρού Σταυρού στην Αθήνα. Μετεκπαιδεύθηκε σε θέματα Νευρογενετικής στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Μιλάνου και στο Πανεπιστήμιο Columbia της Νέας Υόρκης.  Εκλέχθηκε διαδοχικά σε όλες τις ακαδημαϊκές βαθμίδες και υπηρέτησε σαν Καθηγητής Νευρολογίας, Διευθυντής της Πανεπιστημιακής Νευρολογικής Κλινικής και Πρόεδρος του Τμήματος Ιατρικής της Σχολής Επιστημών Υγείας του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας. Πριν από την εκλογή του στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου είχε εκλεγεί Καθηγητής στην Ιατρική Σχολή του Εθνικού & Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών θέση την οποία δεν αποδέχθηκε μετά την εκλογή του στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. 

Διετέλεσε Διευθυντής της Μονάδας Νευροεπιστημών και του ερευνητικού και διαγνωστικού Εργαστηρίου Νευρογενετικής του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας. Είναι ιδρυτικό μέλος της Ελληνικής Ακαδημίας Νευροανοσολογίας και της Ομάδας μελέτης του ρόλου της μεσογειακής διατροφής στα νευροεκφυλιστικά νοσήματα (The Hellenic Longitudinal Investigation of Aging and Diet-HELIAD). Συμμετέχει σαν κύριος ερευνητής σε διεθνείς ομάδες μελέτης νευρολογικών νοσημάτων συμπεριλαμβανομένων του Genetic Epidemiology of Parkinson's Disease consortium (GEO-PD), του International Stroke Thrombolysis Register (SITS-ISTR) και του International Multiple Sclerosis Genetic Consortium (IMSGC). Διετέλεσε αντιπρόεδρος του European Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (EURLSSG).Η αυτόνομη ερευνητική δραστηριότητα αλλά και οι διεθνείς συνεργασίες του κου Χατζηγεωργίου απέδωσαν πέραν των 240 PubMed δημοσιεύσεων (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/?term=hadjigeorgiou+g) με Scopus h-index > 40. Profile Information

 

Prof. Hadjigeorgiou is a Professor of Neurology, Medical School, University of Cyprus. He received his MD and PhD degree from Kapodistrian & National University of Cyprus. Previous academic positions include Professor of Neurology/Chair of the Department of Neurology and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Thessaly, Greece.  His postdoctoral training includes post-doctoral research fellowships at University of Milano, and Columbia University, New York. 

His major research interest is in the field of Neurogenetics/ genetic epidemiology of complex neurological diseases (Metabolic Myopathies, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, etc) His research output includes more than 240 PubMed publications and his activity has been recognized in >6000 citations in Scopus (h-index=40) and >9000 in Scholar (h-index=52). He published in high-impact scientific journals including Cell, Nature Commun, Nature Genetics, Lancet Neurology, JAMA, Annals of Neurology and Neurology. He has extensive clinical and research experience and currently, he collaborates with all Medical Departments in Greece/Cyprus and with leading research centres and study groups abroad (Laboratory of Neurogenetics NIH/NIA, Columbia NY, GEO-PD, IMSGC, EURLSSG, etc.). Among others, he is currently site PI in the Genetic Epidemiology of Parkinson’s Disease (GEO-PD) and in International Multiple Sclerosis Genetic Consortium (IMSGC). He also served as Vice President of the European Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (EURLSSG). He has received financial support from participation in various research programs (FP7; Greek General Secretariat for Research and Technology; Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation; Alzheimer Association USA; PD Foundation, USA).
