Καθηγητής Πάνος Ραζής - Πολύ σύντομο Βιογραφικό Σημείωμα

Ο Πάνος Ραζής είναι Καθηγητής Φυσικής στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Διαθέτει Πτυχίο Φυσικής από το Εθνικό Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (1980) και Master of Science (1982), Master of Philosophy (1982) και Διδακτορικό (1986) στη Φυσική από το Πανεπιστήμιο Yale των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών της Αμερικής.
 
Εργάστηκε στο Πανεπιστήμιο Yale, στο Εθνικό Πολυτεχνείο ETH της Ζυρίχης και στο Ευρωπαϊκό Ερευνητικό Κέντρο CERN, όπου από το 1986 μέχρι σήμερα διεξάγει τα πειράματά του στη Φυσική Υψηλών Ενεργειών. Είναι από τα πρωταρχικά στελέχη του πειράματος CMS στον Επιταχυντή LHC που ανακάλυψε το μποζόνιο Higgs, ανακάλυψη για την οποία δόθηκε το βραβείο Nobel Φυσικής το 2013 στους καθηγητές Francois Englert και Peter Higgs που επινόησαν το μοντέλο δημιουργίας της μάζας των στοιχειωδών σωματιδίων και των φορέων των δυνάμεων που εμφανίζονται στο Σύμπαν. Τα γνωστικά του αντικείμενα και ερευνητικά προγράμματα εστιάζονται στην περιοχή της Φυσικής Υψηλών Ενεργειών, την Αστροσωματιδιακή Φυσική, την Ιονίζουσα και Μη-ιονίζουσα Ακτινοβολία και την Ιατρική Φυσική.
 
Διετέλεσε Πρόεδρος της Συνόδου Πρυτάνεων των Κυπριακών Πανεπιστημίων (2008-2011), πρώτος Πρόεδρος του Ανοικτού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου (2003-2011) με καθήκοντα Προέδρου Συμβουλίου και Πρύτανη του Ιδρύματος, Αντιπρόεδρος του Κυπριακού Συμβουλίου Αξιολόγησης Τίτλων Σπουδών (ΚΥΣΑΤΣ, 2003-2006), Πρόεδρος του Τμήματος Φυσικής και Πρόεδρος διαφόρων Επιτροπών του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου (Έρευνας, Ασφάλειας, Υγείας, Οργάνωσης και Ανάπτυξης Κτιρίων). Διετέλεσε επίσης Πρόεδρος Διεθνών Επιτροπών εξωτερικής αξιολόγησης Τμημάτων Φυσικής Πανεπιστημίων, Εκλεκτορικών Σωμάτων και Επιτροπών Ανέλιξης ακαδημαϊκού προσωπικού, Μέλος του Κυπριακού Συμβουλίου Ανώτατης Εκπαίδευσης και Πρόεδρος της Επιτροπής Αναβάθμισης της Αστυνομικής Ακαδημίας Κύπρου. Είναι Μέλος του Επιστημονικού Συμβουλίου Φυσικών Επιστημών του Εθνικού Συμβουλίου Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας της Ελλάδος.
 
Κατά τη διάρκεια της πορείας ένταξης της Κύπρου στο CERN ορίστηκε Πρόεδρος της μικτής Επιτροπής Κύπρου-CERN. Σήμερα είναι Scientific Delegate της Κύπρου στο CERN και Εκπρόσωπος της χώρας στην Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή ECFA, η οποία διαμορφώνει τη μελλοντική στρατηγική της Ευρώπης σε θέματα επιταχυντών, σωματιδιακής φυσικής και άλλων συναφών πεδίων με ανάπτυξη μεγάλων έργων. Είναι Συντονιστής του έργου ανάπτυξης ενός Κέντρου Κυκλοτρονίου για παρασκευή ραδιοφαρμάκων στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου και Σύμβουλος της Κυπριακής Πολιτείας σε θέματα εγκατάστασης επιταχυντών για διαγνωστικούς και θεραπευτικούς σκοπούς σοβαρών ασθενειών (καρκίνος, εκφυλιστικές παθήσεις).
 
Από το 1992 ηγείται της Κυπριακής Ομάδας Φυσικής Υψηλών Ενεργειών, ίδρυσε δύο ερευνητικά εργαστήρια στην Κύπρο και διετέλεσε Επιστημονικός Υπεύθυνος σε περισσότερα από 30 ερευνητικά προγράμματα. Διαθέτει 1159 δημοσιεύσεις σε διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά, 45 Technical Design Reports και Experimental Proposals, 42 Technical Notes και μία διεθνή πατέντα ευρεσιτεχνίας. Έχει διδάξει 16 διαφορετικά μαθήματα φυσικής και καθοδήγησε 10 μεταδιδακτορικούς ερευνητές, 16 συνεργάτες έρευνας, 14 διδακτορικούς φοιτητές, 11 φοιτητές μάστερ και 50 Διπλωματικές Εργασίες. Διοργάνωσε ή συνδιοργάνωσε 10 διεθνή Συνέδρια και έλαβε μέρος σε πολλά διεθνή συνέδρια στην Κύπρο και στο εξωτερικό.
 
Διετέλεσε Πρεσβευτής του Fair Play της Κύπρου για τον αθλητισμό στο Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο και υπαρχηγός αποστολής σε τέσσερεις Πανεπιστημιάδες και στους πρόσφατους Μεσογειακούς Αγώνες. Υπήρξε μέλος της Εθνικής Ομάδας της Ελλάδος και Κύπρου στο στίβο και την Πετόσφαιρα και συνιδρυτής και πρώτος Πρόεδρος του σωματείου Αθλητικός Πανεπιστημιακός Όμιλος Κύπρου (ΑΠΟΚ). Είναι Μέλος του Εκτελεστικού Συμβουλίου της Ευρωπαϊκής Ομοσπονδίας Πανεπιστημιακού Αθλητισμού (EUSA), Αντιπρόεδρος της Κυπριακής Ομοσπονδίας Πανεπιστημιακού Αθλητισμού (ΚΟΠΑ) και Μέλος της Ολυμπιακής Ακαδημίας Κύπρου με στόχο τη διάδοση των αρχών του Ολυμπισμού.

Profile Information

 
Prof. Panos Razis
Panos Razis is a Professor of Physics at the University of Cyprus. He holds a BSc degree in Physics from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (1980) and a Master of Science (1982), Master of Philosophy (1982) and Ph.D. (1986) degrees in Physics from Yale University, USA.
 
He worked at Yale University, at the National Polytechnic School of Zurich (ETH-Zurich) and at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), where since 1986 he is conducting his experiments in High Energy Physics. He is one of the leading members of the CMS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that discovered the Higgs boson, which led to the award of the Nobel Prize in Physics (2013) to Profs Francois Englert and Peter Higgs - for the discovery of a mechanism that contributes to the understanding of the origin of mass of the subatomic particles. His areas of expertise and research programs focus in High Energy Physics, Astroparticle Physics, Ionizing and Non-Ionizing Radiation and Medical Physics.
 
He served as President of the Rectors Conference of Cyprus (2008-2011), first President of the Governing Board of the Open University of Cyprus (2003-2011), Vice President of the Cyprus Council for the Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications (ΚΥΣΑΤΣ 2003-2006), Chairman of the Physics Department, member off the Senate and Chairman of several Committees (Research, Safety, Health, Organization and Development of Buildings) of the University of Cyprus. He also served as Chairman of international committees for the evaluation of universities, Election and Promotion Committees of the academic staff, member of the Cyprus Higher Education Council and Chairman of the Committee for the upgrade of the Cyprus Police Academy. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the National Council of Research and Innovation of Greece for the Natural Sciences.
 
During the course of the Cyprus accession at CERN he was appointed as President of the Cyprus-CERN Committee. He currently serves as Scientific Delegate of Cyprus at CERN and appointed member in the European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA), which shapes the European strategy on accelerators, particle physics and other related fields with major impact for science and society. He is the Coordinator of a project on the development of a Cyclotron Center for the production of radiopharmaceuticals at the University Campus and Advisor of the Cyprus government on the installation of a Proton Therapy Center for radiation treatment of serious diseases (cancer, degenerative diseases).
 
Since 1992 he founded and leads the Cyprus High-Energy Physics Group at CERN. He founded 2 research and 3 teaching laboratories at the University of Cyprus and he was the Scientific Coordinator of 30 research projects. He has 1159 publications in international refereed journals, 45 Technical Design Reports and Experimental Proposals, 42 Technical Notes and 1 international patent. He taught 16 different courses in the physics curriculum and supervised 7 postdoctoral researchers, 16 research assistants, 14 PhD students, 11 Master students and 50 Diploma Theses. He organized or co-organized 10 international conferences and participated in many international conferences and workshops in Cyprus and abroad.
 
He served as Ambassador of Cyprus for Fair Play under the European Council and as Deputy Head of the Cyprus Delegation to 4 consecutive Universiade Games and to the latest Mediterranean Games. He was a member of the National Teams of Greece and Cyprus in track and field and volleyball and co-founder and first President of the University Sports Club (ΑΠΟΚ). He is currently an elected member of the Executive Board of the European Universities Sports Association (EUSA), member of the National Olympic Academy of Cyprus and Vice President of the Cyprus University Sports Federation (ΚΟΠΑ).
