Προσωπικό Προφίλ

Πήρα Πτυχίο στη Βιολογία από το ομώνυμο Τμήμα του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών (1988) και τον τίτλο του Διδάκτορα της Βιολογίας από το ίδιο Τμήμα (1994). Από το 1996 έως το 2001 εργάστηκα ως Επιστημονικός Συνεργάτης στο Ζωολογικό Μουσείο του Παν. Αθηνών.Το 2001 εκλέχθηκα Λέκτορας (Οικολογίας Χερσόβιων Ζωικών Οργανισμών) στο Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών (Τμήμα Βιολογίας) και το 2006 Επίκουρος Καθηγητής (Οικολογίας και Βιογεωγραφίας Χερσόβιων Ζωικών Οργανισμών) στο ίδιο Τμήμα.Τον Ιανουάριο του 2012 ανέλαβα καθήκοντα ως Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής (Οικολογίας και Βιοποικιλότητας) στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου (Τμήμα Βιολογικών Επιστημών).
Τα ερευνητικά μου ενδιαφέροντα αφορούν το πεδίο της ανάλυσης των προτύπων της βιοποικιλότητας, με έμφαση στις χερσαίες βιοκοινότητες αρθροπόδων. Ειδικότερα, με ενδιαφέρουν οι επιδράσεις των κλιματικών αλλαγών σε είδη και βιοκοινότητες που εκμεταλλεύονται ενδιαιτήματα ευάλωτα στις αλλαγές αυτές, όπως οι όχθες ρεμάτων, τα ορεινά δάση και οι (υπο)αλπικές περιοχές. Τα ενδιαφέροντά μου μέχρι στιγμής έχουν εστιαστεί κυρίως στη νησιωτική βιογεωγραφία, τόσο σε θεωρητικό όσο και σε εμπειρικό επίπεδο, διερευνώντας παράγοντες που καθορίζουν ή επηρεάζουν την ποικιλότητα σε νησιωτικούς βιοκόσμους. Εξετάζω επίσης τη διαφοροποίηση αρθροπόδων σε νησιωτικές περιοχές, ιδίως στο αιγαιακό αρχιπέλαγος και στους ημι-απομονωμένους βιοτόπους της ηπειρωτικής Ελλάδας, τόσο σε φαινοτυπικό όσο και σε μοριακό επίπεδο.Επιπλέον, είμαι ειδικός στην ταξινόμηση των χερσόβιων ισοπόδων (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea) και έχω περιγράψει περί τα 20 νέα είδη για την επιστήμη.Μια άλλη περιοχή των ερευνητικών μου δραστηριοτήτων περιλαμβάνει τη σύγκριση βιοκοινοτήτων αρθροπόδων που εκμεταλλεύονται διαφορετικούς βιοτόπους, καθώς και τις αποκρίσεις τους στη φωτιά. Μέρος της έρευνάς μου αφορά την αναπαραγωγική και μεταναστευτική συμπεριφορά ειδών πτηνών, όπως των Falco eleonorae και Calonectris diomedea.

Profile Information

I received my Degree in Biology at the University of Athens (1988) and my PhD at the same Department (1994). From 1996 to 2001, I worked as Research Assistant at the Zoological Museum of the Univ. of Athens.In 2001 I was elected as a Lecturer (Ecology of Terrestrial Animals) at the University of Patras (Dept. of Biology), and as an Assistant Professor (Ecology and Biogeography of Terrestrial Animals) in 2006.In January 2012 I started working as an Associate Professor (Ecology and Biodiversity) at the University of Cyprus (Dept. of Biological Sciences).
My research interests lie in the field of biodiversity pattern analysis, with emphasis on terrestrial arthropod communities. More specifically, I am interested in the effects of climate change on species and communities exploiting habitats vulnerable to such change, such as riparian, elevated forests and (sub)alpine habitats. My research so far has mainly focused on island biogeography, at both the theoretical and the empirical levels, exploring factors that determine or affect diversity in insular biota. I also explore the differentiation of arthropod taxa in insular regions, particularly in the Aegean archipelago and in semi-isolated habitats of continental Greece, at both the phenotypical and the molecular levels. Furthermore, I am an expert in the taxonomy of terresrtial isopods (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea) and have described some 20 species new to science.Another line of my research includes the exploration of arthropod communities exploiting different habitat types, as well as their responses to fire. A part of my work has been on the reproductive and migratory behaviour of certain bird species, such as Falco eleonorae and Calonectris diomedea.
