Bernadette graduated in English Language and Literature from the University of Surrey in 1992 and completed her Masters in TESL at the Institute of Education, University of London in 1995. She has extensive experience in teaching both English for Academic Purposes and English for Specific Purposes. Recently she has designed and taught courses in English for Architecture and English for Public Speaking. In developing such courses, Bernadette has focused much research on the importance of making a learner-centered environment both within the classroom and extending this through e-learning outside of the language classroom. Language learners are actively encouraged to take ownership of their learning and to understand the relevance of all tasks in which they participate. She is currently looking at the role of assessment in ESP courses and how a variety of approaches can more effectively measure progress whilst at the same time provide meaningful activities for the learner.
